About endometriosis

Endometriosis is a chronic condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows outside it, usually in the pelvis, where it can become inflamed and cause pain, especially around a period. It affects roughly 1 in 10 people with a uterus of reproductive age. Typical symptoms are pelvic pain during or outside a period, pain with deep penetration, pain on opening the bowels, bloating, tiredness and, for some people, difficulty getting pregnant. Diagnosis is often delayed because the symptoms resemble those of other problems. If these fit, see a doctor for assessment and treatment options.
