Pregnancy risk during your period

Having penetrative sex during your period does not remove the risk of pregnancy: ovulation can come early and varies between cycles and between people, and sperm can survive for several days. If ovulation arrives sooner than expected, which happens with short cycles, they could fertilize an egg. Using contraception during your period is recommended if you are not trying to conceive.
