About late periods

In an emergency, call 112 or your local emergency number.

  1. Common causes of a late period

The menstrual cycle is not always perfect. The brain and the ovaries are connected, and they are very sensitive to what is going on in your day to day.

Common causes of a late period

Ongoing stress, sudden changes to your sleep, travel; changes in weight or intense exercise; hormonal conditions such as PCOS, thyroid problems, high prolactin or perimenopause; and side effects of medication, among others.

Check for method failures: missed or late pills, patches or rings, severe vomiting or diarrhea after taking one, or a condom slipping or breaking.

If you have any doubt about how well your method worked, take a urine pregnancy test.
