Protection

Missed doses

In an emergency, call 112 or your local emergency number.

With the combined pill, a lapse of under 48 hours does not reduce protection: take the dose as soon as you remember and carry on. Two or more missed doses, or more than 48 hours without one, do reduce it: use condoms for the next 7 days and, if there was unprotected sex in those days, consider emergency contraception.

The progestogen-only pill has a smaller margin: 3 hours for the traditional kind, 12 for desogestrel. Past it, use condoms for the next 48 hours. With the patch or ring, more than 48 hours without them counts as two missed pills.
